Most software treats a stylist like a shop.

SmartScanit records what HMRC actually expects from hair & beauty — takings kept gross, chair or room rent tracked as its own cost, stock and product spend split from equipment, mobile mileage worked out client to client.

Straight answers
Is SmartScanit MTD HMRC-recognised?

Recognition is in progress. Until it's confirmed we won't take payment, and the "send to HMRC" step isn't switched on. Registering now just puts you first in line.

Do you file for me?

No — and that's the point. Your figures are built from your records, you check them, and you send them from the app through your own Government Gateway. Nobody else touches your HMRC account.

What about the final declaration?

The four quarterly updates come first. The end-of-year final declaration follows in a later release, before the 31 January deadline.

I'm under the threshold this year — should I bother?

If you turn over £30,000+ you're in from April 2027; £20,000+ from April 2028. Keeping digital records now means no scramble later, and you'll have a full year of history when you join.

Is my chair rent an expense?

Yes — chair or room rent is a normal business cost. SmartScanit records it separately from your takings automatically, whether you're on a fixed weekly rent or a percentage arrangement.

Does it do property income?

Not yet. This release is self-employment income only. If you also have UK or foreign property income you'll need software that supports it.
